With its unrivalled ability to calm, hydrate and reinforce the skin barrier, ectoin is set to be 2026’s most-loved skincare ingredient for very good reason.
It’s that time of the year. Not only are we reflecting on 2025, but we’re also prepping for what the next one has in store. That means having a declutter and also rethinking our everyday habits, such as our skincare routines. If ‘a healthy skin barrier’ is on your new year’s resolution list, we have good news. There’s one single ingredient that’s guaranteed to help you achieve that, and that’s ectoin.
It’s perfect if you’ve experienced more redness or sensitivity than you would have liked this year. It’s already making a name for itself thanks to its clever ability to hold onto water, so when it’s used in the skincare space, it becomes an effective moisture magnet that helps protect the skin barrier. And as well as being an antioxidant, ectoin also has an incredibly soothing effect.
If ectoin sounds like it might be right up your street, we asked a skincare expert to break all the benefits down and explain why it’s an ingredient to watch. Here’s what they had to say…
What is ectoin?
“Ectoin is a naturally formed extremolyte found in organisms that thrive in extreme conditions, such as high temperatures, extreme cold and in places where there’s a lack of water. Essentially, it is a stress protector,” says Dr Justine Hextall, consultant dermatologist.
It’s the latest buzzy ingredient for its soothing and strengthening properties. “Ectoin works by creating an effective shield that protects the skin barrier from environmental aggressors, including cold and dry air, pollution and light exposure (but it isn’t and shouldn’t be used as a substitute for SPF). Not only does it hold onto moisture, but it also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. To me, it makes perfect sense that it’s used as a skincare ingredient, simply because it’s able to create a highly effective moisture complex,” says Dr Hextall.
Does ectoin suit all skin types?
Unlike a lot of the ingredients out there that might rub certain skin types the wrong way, ectoin is beneficial for even the oiliest or most sensitive of skin. “All skin types will benefit from extra protection that ectoin can provide. While we are getting better at wearing effective broad-spectrum SPF daily, we talk less about effective solutions for protecting skin from pollution. We know that pollution works together with longer wavelengths of UV to increase damage caused to both the skin barrier and collagen, so I see this shielding ingredient as working more to help create a sealing barrier against moisture loss and the pro-inflammatory damage of pollutants entering the skin,” says Dr Hextall.
It’s featured in different formulations, from serums and moisturisers to toners, so you’re bound to find the perfect fit for your skincare routine.
