The boho bob instantly adds texture to fine hair – here’s why it’s trending
This haircut is a nod to the 60s and 70s, and it’s going to be huge this winter.
You may remember the boho hair trend that dominated at the end of last year – all wind-swept fringes and choppy, voluminous layers. It’s the ultimate cool girl hairstyle, right out of the 60s and 70s. However, if you want to give it a modern update, there’s also the boho bob to consider.
It combines the texture we know and love with a trendy, modern bob cut. The important part is the cutting technique. It’s all about mimicking thickness (even if you might not have it naturally).
“The boho bob is the ‘undone’ bob: it’s softer, less structured and has a lived-in texture that feels effortless rather than overly polished,” says Sam Burnett, founder and creative lead at Hare & Bone. “I describe it as a bob with movement: slightly broken ends, light internal texture and a relaxed shape that can be worn air-dried or loosely styled.”
Burnett says it pairs perfectly with soft face-framing layers or a lived-in parting to make it more modern and wearable. Essentially, you can make the boho bob haircut your own. The important thing? The texture. “It needs to be airy, not crunchy,” he says. “I love styling it with a soft wave and a slightly imperfect finish. My go-to method is blast-dry first for volume, then quickly bend a few sections with fingers, straighteners or a large barrel tong, don’t curl every piece or it starts looking ‘done’.” Finish it off with a texturising spray through the ends.
Part of the appeal of the boho bob is that it’s customisable, depending on your face shape. “It suits most face shapes because you can tailor where the length sits and how much softness you build around the face. Oval and heart shapes tend to suit it instantly, but it also works beautifully on round faces when it’s slightly longer and worn with a soft centre or off-centre parting. For square face shapes, I’d add subtle face-framing and texture around the jawline to keep everything flattering and effortless,” says Burnett.
Another bonus is that it’s a lot less hassle to maintain than other bobs. As it’s not as polished as other cuts, like the A-line bob, not every millimetre matters, so you can get away with letting it grow out a little. “The boho bob grows out more softly and doesn’t ‘collapse’ as quickly, so it’s usually more forgiving between appointments, especially if you like the air-dried, natural finish,” says Burnett.
If you’re inspired by the boho bob and are counting down the days until your next appointment, here’s all the inspiration you need to have to hand.
