Ted Lasso season 4 finally gives women’s football the spotlight it deserves

TV

As the football comedy returns to screens later this year, here’s everything you need to know about its new direction.

Men’s football: fine. But we all know that the really exciting stuff is happening in the women’s game. Even Ted Lasso has cottoned on.

Apple TV has announced that season four of the award-winning sports drama will see Ted return to Richmond to coach a second division women’s team. We’re thinking Bend It Like Beckham, but with more shortbread and fewer inappropriate relationships.

What happened at the end of the third season of Ted Lasso?

AFC Richmond was back in the Premier League, where they finished second, but it was an even more dramatic second-half for Ted (Jason Sudeikis) as he revealed he was returning to Kansas to be with his son. Elsewhere, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) kept her stake in the club (selling 49% to fans); Jamie (Phil Dunster) mended his relationship with his father; and Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) earned a call-up to the Nigerian national team.

What can we expect from the fourth season of Ted Lasso?

Despite leaving in a blaze of glory over two and a half years ago, Ted can’t stay away from Richmond (and it looks like he’s arrived on a private jet, so who can blame him), despite rumours that season three was game over for the show.

And while we don’t have many details about what Ted’s move into the women’s game will involve, the synopsis notes that “throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would”.

Who stars in Ted Lasso season 4?

Alongside Jason Sudeikis are Hannah Waddingham as AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton; Juno Temple as Keeley; Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent; Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard; and Jeremy Swift as director of football operations Leslie Higgins. It hasn’t yet been announced if we’ll see the return of Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie Tartt, or Nick Mohammed, who’s fresh from his stint as a faithful in The Celebrity Traitors.

New additions to the cast include Sex Education star Tanya Reynolds as a team coach, Adolescence’s Faye Marsay, and Grant Feely as Ted’s son, Henry.

When can I watch Ted Lasso season 4?

The show will start on Apple TV in summer 2026. And with the men’s World Cup starting on 11 June in the US, Canada and Mexico, it’s going to be a busy summer of sport.
