Always fighting with your colleagues? Your incompatible star signs could be to blame
We often think about astrological compatibility in terms of our loves lives, but have you ever thought about how compatible you are with your colleagues? Astrologer Yasmin Boland explains everything you need to know.
When it comes to our love lives, we often look to the stars to help determine how compatible we are with our crushes or whoever we’re dating (and if not for ourselves, then definitely for our friends). Yet how often have you thought to apply that same logic to your work life?
We arguably spend just as much (maybe even more) time with our colleagues as we do with our partners, so it’s imperative that we get on with them as best we can. And yet, even when you have the best of intentions, try as we may, we just can’t seem to work with some people. Maybe their style of working doesn’t flow with your way of doing things or you regularly clash, butt heads and explosively fall out. On the other hand, some colleagues get on famously well, not just working well together but even bringing out the best in one another.
According to expert astrologer Yasmin Boland, these dynamics could be written in the stars as certain star signs are more likely to work well together than others. But before you send that company-wide email demanding everyone reply with their star signs ‘for research’, Boland says that there’s more to it than simply ranking pairings of signs from best to worst.
Which star signs are most compatible at work?
There are 12 star signs, which means 66 possible combinations – and that’s before you factor in the rest of someone’s birth chart. With this in mind, Boland explains that looking at elemental compatibility is the easiest way to determine a baseline compatibility.
Fire signs (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) tend to work best with air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius) and their fellow fire signs and vice versa,” says Boland. Meanwhile, water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) tend to work best with those with earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) and other water signs – and vice versa.
“Earth and water signs tend to understand how the other ticks, just as fire and air do,” Boland says. “Earth is grounded, while water is emotional – those differences can feel complementary. Fire and air, meanwhile, share energy, speed and enthusiasm. Problems usually arise when these groups mix across elements. Earth signs may find air signs too scattered and fire signs too volatile, while air signs can see earth signs as rigid. Fire signs can experience water signs as overly sensitive, while water signs may feel overwhelmed by a fire sign’s intensity.”
However, it doesn’t end there. “Just to complicate matters, one exception to all of this is when you have opposite signs together,” says Boland. These, she explains, could go either way – it could be terribly fantastic or fantastically terrible. “They can be magnetic (in the sense that opposites attract) because they bring what the other lacks. But they can also become rivals (just like how magnets repel) if other factors in their chart set them against each other.”
The opposite signs are:
- Aries and Libra
- Taurus and Scorpio
- Gemini and Sagittarius
- Cancer and Capricorn
- Leo and Aquarius
- Virgo and Pisces
“For example, Cancer and Capricorn are water and earth signs, so they should, in theory, work well together,” explains Boland. “However, because they’re opposites, they can slip into competition around emotion versus authority.”
Just like we don’t get to choose our family, we don’t get to choose our colleagues (unless you’re the hiring manager, that is). So, if you find yourself working with a difficult star sign, consider this your cheat sheet on how to navigate them:
Aries: Keep things fast, direct and solution-focused. They calm down when they feel respected for their initiative and not slowed by endless meetings.
Taurus: Don’t rush them. Give them notice before changes, stick to agreed plans and show that you value their reliability and expertise.
Gemini: Communicate often and clearly. They respond best when they feel informed, mentally stimulated and included in conversations.
Cancer: Lead with emotional intelligence. Acknowledge their efforts, avoid public criticism and create a sense of safety before tackling problems.
Leo: Recognise their contribution. Praise in public goes a long way, and disagreements land better when handled privately and respectfully.
Virgo: Be prepared and precise. They relax when processes are clear, deadlines are realistic and details haven’t been overlooked.
Libra: Keep things fair and collaborative. They’ll engage more willingly when decisions feel balanced and everyone’s been consulted.
Scorpio: Be transparent and discreet. They work best when trust is solid and power struggles are avoided.
Sagittarius: Give them room to move. Focus on the bigger picture rather than micromanaging, and keep conversations optimistic and forward-looking.
Capricorn: Show professionalism and competence. They respect structure, authority and long-term goals (and dislike emotional theatrics at work).
Aquarius: Appeal to logic and innovation. They cooperate more easily when they feel their ideas are being taken seriously and they’re allowed independence.
Pisces: Use kindness and clarity. Gentle delivery paired with firm boundaries helps prevent misunderstandings or emotional overload.
