How to read Korean INCI lists like a pro

One of the most intimidating aspects of Korean skincare is the ingredient list. INCI lists are often longer and packed with unfamiliar botanical names – but length alone needn’t be a red flag.

“Korean formulations often include extract complexes,” says Kwon. “Rather than listing them as one blend, brands list each botanical individually, which naturally makes the INCI list look longer.”

Instead of focusing on how long the list is, she recommends asking three questions: what is the base of the formula? Are barrier-supporting or soothing ingredients placed relatively high up the list? Does the product have a clear purpose?

“It’s also worth remembering that the base isn’t always just water,” she adds. “In Korean products, it might be green tea water, rice ferment filtrate or mugwort water, which add functional value from the very first step.”

Viral doesn’t always mean better

With TikTok driving trends at lightning speed, experts urge caution when shopping purely on hype. “I see a surprising number of people sending me links to products and brands that I’ve never heard of,” says Hall. “Just because something is everywhere online doesn’t mean it’s right for your skin.”

Welsh agrees. “Viral products can be a good entry point, but they shouldn’t be the deciding factor. Healthy skin comes from consistency, not constantly chasing the next launch,” he says. That’s especially true of calming ingredients like centella asiatica and heartleaf. “These ingredients are often expected to act like fast-acting actives,” says Kwon, “when they’re actually designed to work gradually and preventatively.”

Who does K-beauty work best for (and where to start)

While Korean skincare is widely considered gentle, experts stress that no ingredient works for everyone – and context always matters. “Snail mucin is a good example,” says Kwon. “It’s widely valued for hydration and repair, but because it’s very humectant-rich, it can feel heavy on extremely oily skin, particularly in hot or humid climates. The ingredient itself isn’t problematic – it’s about how it fits into your skin type, environment and overall routine.”

Where Korean skincare really shines is in supporting the skin barrier, which is why certain skin types tend to see the biggest benefits. “People with very dry, sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea and mature skin often do particularly well,” Hall says. “Anything where the skin barrier is compromised.”

But rather than adding more steps, she recommends focusing on thoughtful layering. “Multi-layering hydrating products like toner, essence and moisturiser can be incredibly effective,” she says. “It’s not about more steps – it’s about choosing the right ones.”

For those unsure where to begin, Hall suggests starting with cleansing. “Double cleansing is a standout,” she says. “Korean cleansing oils and balms emulsify exceptionally well. If you’re not cleansing properly, skincare products simply can’t work as effectively.”

Done correctly, double cleansing removes sunscreen, make-up and pollution without stripping the skin, helping protect the barrier and reduce inflammation. “Korean SPFs are already well known,” Hall adds, “but oil-based cleansers remain a slightly hidden gem.”
