One interior design decision we’re prone to agonising over is paint colours. We’ve all had the experience of standing in front of hundreds of swatches, utterly bewildered, trying to tell the difference between the most subtle of butter yellow shades and visualise whether burnt orange would actually look good in our living room or if we’re imagining it.  And while trends aren’t to be followed blindly, and personal taste will always be the best instinct to follow, they can be helpful to guide you in deciding what works for you.

Interestingly, as we head into 2026, paint trends are moving away from bold, headline colours and towards something far more considered, say the experts at Frenchic Paint. Instead of asking what looks good, people are increasingly asking what feels right to live with. The result is a shift towards thoughtful colour pairings that create atmosphere, balance and longevity.

Clearly, colour is being used less as decoration and more to shape how a space feels, helping rooms feel calmer, warmer and more supportive of everyday life. After all, we need our homes to work harder than ever. They are places to rest, focus, socialise and retreat, often all in the same day.

According to Jen Devaney, Frenchic paint’s colour consultant, there are a few key colour families that are being tipped to stand out in 2026.

Jewel and earthy greens continue to grow in popularity. “Softer shades such as moss, olive and sage feel grounding without being heavy, making them easy to live with across large areas. They bring a quiet sense of connection to nature and work just as well in modern spaces as they do in older homes,” she explains.

Deep blues and teals are also becoming more prominent. “These shades add depth and sophistication without the starkness of black or charcoal. They create a sense of calm and containment, which makes them ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and studies,” Devaney says.

At the same time, warm earthy neutrals are replacing cooler greys. Clay, stone and muted brown tones soften a space and provide a warmer backdrop for stronger colours.

Finally, accent hues are being used with more restraint. Rich plums, red-based browns and softened pinks are appearing in smaller doses, adding character and warmth without overwhelming a room.

Devaney believes that what defines successful colour use in 2026 is balance rather than boldness. “Pairing a deep blue, such as After Midnight, or a jewel-toned blue, like Steel Teal, with a warm neutral, such as Cream Dream, grounds a space while keeping it light and welcoming,” she shares. “This combination works particularly well in kitchens and living areas, where you want depth without heaviness.”

Muted greens like Olivia, Apple Of My Eye or Bradstock create a calm foundation when paired with natural materials, but they also work beautifully with soft pinks such as Last Dance or Sweet Cheeks. The contrast adds warmth and softness without losing the grounded feel.

“For a richer look, accent colours like Boho Berry, Riad Red or Dawlish work best when balanced with stone neutrals such as Cool Beans or Sugar Puff. This pairing adds personality and depth while remaining timeless and wearable,” she adds.

Ultimately, the trend for 2026 is about choosing colour combinations that support how you live and creating homes that feel good not just now, but for years to come.
