How to spot a job worth jumping for in 2026
Should you be a ‘job hugger’ or a ‘job hopper’ in 2026? A career expert breaks down the green flags that suggest a role is worth switching for.
At the best of times, taking on a new role in a different environment comes with an element of risk. Will you like your colleagues as much? Is the package you’ve been offered all it’s cracked up to be? And in the current job market, where vacancies fell by 44,000 from March to June 2025, it can feel like even more of a gamble.
This continued uncertainty has led to a trend experts have termed ‘job hugging’, where workers cling to their current role, even if they’re growing bored with it.
According to research from Totaljobs, 41% of workers plan to stay put this year, prioritising job security above the temptation to find out whether the grass really is greener on the other side. However, an equal number of workers (41%) are actively on the hunt for a new job in 2026, with a desire for a higher salary (51%) as their main motivator.
But that leap of faith into the unknown is easier said than done. Totaljobs found that 53% of people cited job security as their primary reason for staying in a role. So, ‘job huggers’ aren’t just clingy. Choosing the safe option to stay put in such an increasingly volatile job landscape and cost of living crisis makes sense.
According to Luke Mckend, managing director at Stepstone Group, the hug/hop split makes sense. “Workers are navigating not just short-term cost of living pressures, but long-term shifts in skills demand, automation and demographic change.”
Everyone knows the challenge of negotiating a pay rise can be daunting, even if you do have the gift of the gab. And, if you are lucky enough to earn yourself a raise, it isn’t guaranteed to ease the financial strain. “Even with widespread pay rises, many workers are still feeling the financial squeeze, pushing salary, transparency and progression to the top of their priorities,” Mckend says.
So if you’ve currently got itchy feet and are wondering if you’re ready to dive into the uncertainty of a new role, how can you be certain that a job is worth the jump? Mckend shares his top green flags to look out for.
Signs a job is worth hopping for
The pay is transparent from the outset
“Salary transparency is vital, so don’t waste time guessing. Transparency signals respect and helps you decide if the role aligns with your expectations and experience before you invest time in the process.”
It offers benefits beyond the pay cheque
“A job worth jumping for should fit your life, not just your bank balance. Look for clear signals like the benefits and development opportunities it offers. If a role is open about its values and how it supports your lifestyle, that’s a sign it’s serious about its people.”
It promises progress, not just change
“Look for roles that spell out progression, training and skill development. If the job description talks about career pathways and internal mobility, that’s a strong sign you’ll keep growing - not standing still.”
The job description will offer more answers than questions
“A vague job description is a red flag. If you can’t picture your day-to-day, the role may not match your skills or expectations. Equally, an endless list of ‘essential’ requirements can signal unrealistic demands. A job worth jumping for strikes the balance: clear responsibilities, achievable expectations and enough stretch to challenge you without burning you out.”
