Why the ‘air pixie’ is the modern update on a classic cut you need to know about

Not sure what to do with your hair? This latest cut will have you itching to make a big chop.

You might be working towards your new year’s resolution of healthier hair already, but when it comes to a bigger hair change, it can be daunting. There’s no denying bobs are still all the rage, particularly the Notting Hill bob that hit our radars recently, but the rise of the pixie cut is well and truly underway for 2026.

Yes, we’re looking to everyone from Princess Diana to Zoë Kravitz for inspiration. However, amongthe bixies and the micro pixies, there’s one particular interpretation of the iconic haircut that has gripped our attention, and that’s the air pixie.

You might think that shorter hair means less volume, but that’s where this haircut comes in. “We’ll see more air-pixies in 2026: lightweight, textured, almost feather-cut,” says Michael Lendon, creative director at Aveda. This means that you don’t have to compromise on texture, even if you’re chopping a hefty amount of hair off. A win-win.

Despite having less hair to work with, it doesn’t mean this cut isn’t adaptable. “The modern pixie is soft, feminine and incredibly versatile. Our clients are realising how liberating short hair can be, and that energy will only grow in 2026,” he says. Less time styling your long strands also means you can hit snooze on that alarm, so the benefits are almost never-ending.

If the air pixie sounds like the perfect hairstyle to suit you, here are all the images you need to save for some cropped look inspiration.
