THE TRIP

Nepal: Everest Base Camp

17 days/16 nights

“For anyone who has an adventure itch to scratch or is looking for a physical challenge immersed in the awe-inspiring nature of Nepal, our 16-nighter to Everest base camp is proper bucket list stuff.

Kicking off in Kathmandu on 31 October next year for the most memorable Halloween you’re ever likely to experience, you and 15 others – including a Stylist staffer – will cook, shop and grace a Buddhist nunnery before flying to Lukla to start the trek. Winding through glaciers, valleys and passes, this is a trip of enjoyment and endurance, with trekking time sometimes 3-4 hours a day and others 7-9 hours.

Along the way, you’ll sleep in traditional teahouses, be welcomed by the Sherpa village of Phortse and watch the sun rise over Everest – all followed by some recovery and pamper time back in Kathmandu. Truly a trekking trip of a lifetime: start breaking in those boots now, I implore you.”

Namaste! Welcome to Kathmandu! Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is the political as well as the cultural capital of the country. Day 2: 1 November 2026
Destination: Kathmandu
Meals included: breakfast, late lunch (at cooking class)

Today in the early morning we head to Kapan Nunnery – Khachoe Ghakyil Ling, a Buddhist nunnery located on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The nunnery’s mission is to provide women who want to dedicate their lives to the Buddha’s teachings with a haven for their study and practice. This unique and exclusive experience will teach you about their daily lives and how they challenge patriarchal Buddhist traditions.

Then we head back to the hotel for breakfast. After a brief break, we’ll drive to Thamel, a popular tourist destination in Kathmandu where you can enjoy a little shopping and gear preparation before the trek.

Later on, you’ll take part in a cooking class at Sungabha Nepal – an organisation that socially and economically empowers marginalised women in Nepal via various education programs, skills training and income generation. While the initiative started with just seven participants, to date over 5,000 women have now been educated, trained and employed here. In the cooking class, you’ll learn how to make delicious Nepali dishes and have the chance to swap stories with these women who have overcome discrimination to turn their lives around. After the class you’ll have the opportunity tuck into your freshly made creations for lunch before spending the late afternoon at your leisure.

Day 3: 2 November 2026
Destination: Phakding (2,610m)
Meals included: breakfast

The day starts very early today as you have a long road trip before you start the trek. Please note that in peak travel times domestic flights to and from Kathmandu arrive and depart from Ramechhap (also known as Manthali) Airport. The airport is located 130km (a four- to five-hour drive) from Kathmandu.

From Ramechhap airport you will then board your aircraft to Lukla, the starting point of your trek. Sitting at 8,848 m, Mt Everest, the highest peak in the world, is one of the greatest trekking destinations. Locally known as Sagarmatha, the mountain has long been revered as the home of the gods. First conquered by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, Everest has traditionally been the ultimate goal for mountaineers. On this trip you will take on the challenge of reaching the mountaineers’ base camp and gain an insight into the world-famous Sherpa culture.

You will cross glaciers and broad plains, traverse valleys and climb high passes to reach the picturesque Everest Base Camp. Our accommodation comprises small, basic teahouses along the track. These basic but cosy remote houses are operated by the mountain Nepalese to cater for trekkers and offer simple yet filling and delicious meals to keep us going. This is a challenging trip and involves difficult trekking at high altitudes but the whole experience is simply awe-inspiring!

After a short safety talk and an introduction to your assistant guides and porter, you’ll gear up and commence your trek. Today is a gentle introduction, following the milk-white Dudh Kosi River for approximately three hours until we reach Phakding (2,610m).

Special information: your trekking time today will be approximately three hours or 8.5km, with an elevation gain of 770m and a descent of 770m.

Included activities
Flight to Lukla (20 minutes) with transfer to Ramechhap with an approximately four- to five-hour drive from Kathmandu
Guided trek to Phakding (approximately three hours)

Accommodation
Local teahouse

Day 4: 3 November 2026
Destination: Namche (3,440m)
Meals included: N/A

After breakfast, you will begin the hike to Namche Bazaar and get your first view of Mount Everest itself. Cross the Dudh Kosi River and follow the beautiful trail up the valley alongside pine trees and rhododendron forests which, in spring, are a amazing sight.

After Benkar, the mountains will come closer, or rather, you will be approaching the giant snow-capped peaks. You will be greeted by Mount Thamserku and the peaks of Kusum Kanguru, towering at 6,000m. Take a lunch break and rest for a bit at Monjo to prepare for the tougher part of the hike as the steep ascent to Namche begins after this point. As you enter Sagarmatha National Park and pass the village of Jorsale, you will begin the climb to Namche. The first glimpse of the mighty Everest awaits you here, along with other peaks like Mount Lhotse, Nuptse and Taweche.

The final arrival at Namche comes as something of a surprise for many as it is a vibrant little town with everything from coffee shops to pool houses, despite it being a settlement in the middle of nowhere.

Special information: your trekking time today will be approximately seven hours or 10km, with an elevation gain of 1,090m and a descent of 335m.

Included activities
Guided trek to Namche (approximately six to seven hours)

Accommodation
Local teahouse

Day 5: 4 November 2026
Destination: Namche (3,440m)
Meals included: N/A

Trekking above 3,000 metres requires that you pay attention to your pace and overall health, so you will spend the day acclimatising to the altitude at Namche. Your tour leader will of course keep you informed about all of the necessary precautions, but you might also want to research a bit about altitude sickness and acclimatisation beforehand to be more aware of the symptoms, so that you can let your leader know if you suspect you are suffering from any symptoms. Remember, health first.

For acclimatisation, one good option is to hike up to the headquarters of Sagarmatha National Park, situated above the bazaar, to observe sunrise and sunset. The panoramic vista of Khumbu peaks and Everest offers gorgeous views.

Also, check if you forgot to bring anything for the journey because Namche is the last place you can buy or hire any additional stuff for the rest of the trek.

Special information: your trekking time today with be approximately 3.5 hours or 5k, with an elevation gain of 465m and a descent of 465m.

Included activities
Acclimatisation at Namche

Day 6: 5 November 2026
Destination: Phortse Gaon (3,810m)
Meals included: N/A

Not many groups stop in Phortse – a traditional Sherpa village that offers a fascinating insight into their life and culture – so today will be something special. Leave Namche and make your way up above the valley, then take the less-travelled fork in the road just after Sanasa. Most travellers follow the same path to and from Base Camp, while you’ll take more of a looping route to see more of the national park. Climb higher for some epic views of the valley below and then stop for a mini acclimatisation lunch at around 4,000m. After lunch, make your way downhill to cross the Dudh Koshi again, then make a final uphill push to your teahouse in Phortse. The dramatic mountain views and the peace and quiet of this village make it one of the highlights of the trek. Here you’ll be almost completely above the treeline, so the sunsets make for a perfect opportunity to take some pictures.

Special information: your trekking time today will be approximately seven hours or 10km, with an elevation gain of 970m and a descent of 550m.

Included activities
Guided trek to Phortse Gaon (approximately seven hours)

Accommodation
Local teahouse

Day 7: 6 November 2026
Destination: Dingboche (4,410m)
Meals included: N/A

Enjoy the stillness of Phortse at sunrise and then set off along the trail, taking in the incredible views of Kangtega, Ama Dablam (6,812m) and – if the skies are clear – Mt Everest. Perhaps stop for a tea in Pangboche, and after lunch in Shomare you’ll notice the scenery around you start to change, with forests being replaced by rocky outcrops.

Once you arrive in Dingboche, you’ll find a beautiful patchwork of small fields enclosed by stone walls. The scenery is once again spectacular and although Everest will be hidden behind the Lhotse-Nuptse Ridge, the huge peaks that tower above the eastern end of the valley are spectacular. If the weather’s right, then there will be gorgeous sunsets illuminating the peaks – Ama Dablam, the south face of Lhotse to the north and Island Peak in the centre of the valley.

Special information: your trekking time today will be approximately eight hours 0r 14km, with an elevation of 920m and a descent of 410m.

Day 8: 7 November 2026

You are gaining more and more altitude, so acclimatisation is a must. You will be staying at Dingboche today, allowing you to explore this Sherpa settlement and adapt to the altitude. Hiking up to Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,600m) and then back down is a good way to acclimatise, and there also are other trails to Nagarjun Hill (5,100m) or Chukkhung (4,750m). All these trails offer magnificent views of the surrounding terrain, including peaks like Makalu, Island Peak and Ama Dablam.

Special information: your trekking time today will be approximately three hours or 4km, with an elevation gain of 425m and a descent of 425m.

Day 9: 8 November 2026
Destination: Lobuche (4,910m)
Meals included: N/A

Once you climb over the small ridge above Pheriche Valley, the trek gets easier for a little while as the trail runs through comparatively level fields. Taweche and Cholatse (6,440m) along with Lobuche Peak (6,119m) will be keeping your group company today, guarding the skyline to the west and north.

Cross the Khumbu Khola before lunch which you will reach the foot of the huge glacial deposit of the Khumbu Glacier. The steep and rocky climb atop the terminal moraines begins after lunch. Walking along the ridge, you’ll pass a line of stone memorials dedicated to Sherpas and climbers who met their deaths during Everest climbing expeditions. The views from here are mesmerising with the peaks of Pumori (7,145m), Lingtren (6,697m), Khumbutse (6,623m) and across the border in Tibet, Changtse (7,550m).

Arrive at Lobuche in the early afternoon and gear up for the big day tomorrow – Everest Base Camp!

Hike parallel to Khumbu Glacier with a gradual, rhythmic ascent to Changri Nup Glacier. The cairn-line rocky trail leads to Gorak Shep (5,160m) after around three to four hours’ walk. Rest for a while and have lunch here before you set off for Everest Base Camp.

After another three hours’ trekking, you will finally reach the ultimate point of your journey – the Everest Base Camp. You will encounter yaks, porters and climbing expeditioners on the way. The Base Camp offers a glorious array of glaciers, lakes, caves, along with the infamous Everest Ice Fall which is regarded as the most dangerous section of the mountain. There are two Base Camps of Everest, the south one lies in Nepal and the north one in Tibet.

Once you’ve fully taken all in the sight and sounds of Everest Base Camp, we return to Gorak Shep for the night.

The climb will take you around one and a half hours and is extremely steep, but the result is so worth it! This is where you will enjoy unbelievable views of Everest. Make sure you enjoy it because this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (although, who knows, you might want to return some day). Along with Everest, the panorama includes peaks like Pumori, Nuptse, Changtse, Ama Dablam, Taweche and Kantega, the Everest Base Camp.

Now, we begin the descent which comes as a huge relief after that strenuous, steep ascent in the morning. Upon crossing the Khumbu Khola River, descend to Pheriche for the night.
