Got fine hair? The skimmed bob involves subtle layers to add volume, and we’re obsessed

Struggling to decide what to do with your fine hair? This latest bob haircut is going to be right up your street.

There’s a reason we all envy 90s hair: its choppy layers create endless volume and have the added bonus of helping to frame the face at the same time. So, why not combine the defining oomph of the decade with a trendy bob? Luckily, that’s exactly what the skimmed bob does.

This update on a classic involves subtle layers to create shape and volume. “This is a beautifully understated, skimmed bob that sits just below the jawline with soft, seamless layers,” says Jason Collier, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Studio23. “It’s not too blunt or too choppy, the texture is subtle, giving it natural movement and versatility. What makes it so chic is the almost ‘grown-in’ feel. It’s polished but not overly styled, making it feel modern and wearable,” he adds.

The haircut has been worn by everyone from Victoria Beckham to Gracie Abrams, and it’s gone viral for its appealing shape. However, it’s the ultimate perfect match if you have wavy or straight hair, according to Collier. “If your hair has a bit of natural texture, it gives the style that effortless, tousled finish.”

What makes this stand out against other trending bobs is its length – it’s almost entering lob territory. To nail the look, it’s important to give your hairstylist a few pointers to get it spot on. “Ask your stylist for a jaw-grazing bob that’s slightly longer at the front and skims the collarbone at its longest point. You want the ends texturised, not blunt, with internal layering to give movement without obvious layers. Mention that you’d like the shape to contour the face softly rather than sit too square or rounded,” says Collier.

Even better? If you’re struggling to add volume to your fine hair, there’s no easier way to do it than with this haircut. “Fine hair benefits because the length gives the illusion of fullness, while thicker hair can handle the subtle layering without looking too heavy,” he adds.

If you want to work out if this haircut is for you, there are a few things to note. “This style is universally flattering, but it’s perfect for those with heart-shaped, oval, or slightly angular faces. The softness around the jawline helps balance sharper bone structure, while the length can elongate rounder face shapes slightly,” says Collier.

If you have a natural wavy texture, you can let your hair air-dry with this style, but if you’ve got pin-straight locks, Collier tells me a texturising cream or sea salt spray to create an ‘undone’ look is a must.

If you’re ready to embrace the skimmed bob, here’s all the hair inspiration you need.
