Balloon trousers are being worn by every fashion person this summer – and they’re equal parts cool and comfy
Voluminous trousers are a summer 2025 hero item. If you’re unsure how to style them, here are five easy ways to make them work in your wardrobe.
Far removed from the tight-fitting cropped capris we’ve seen recently, there’s a new trouser trend that’s being embraced by fashion insiders, and it’s big news. Balloon trousers, formerly known as harem pants, are making waves, having been spotted on fashion editors and content creators all over the world on Instagram. But unlike some trends that trickle in slowly, it seems balloon trousers exploded onto the scene just as soon as summer hit. So where did they come from?
The spring/summer 2025 runways had something to do with it, with Alaïa putting Kendall Jenner down the runway in a billowing black pair of trousers. Chloé followed suit, opting for soft lace-detail pairs in pastel shades to channel into the boho vibe. And even Loewe joined the balloon parade with leather iterations – proof they’ll be sticking around through to autumn, too.
Barrel-leg jeans may have prepared us slightly for this new voluminous silhouette, but balloon trousers are a bit trickier to style than your average pair of trousers because of the extra material and stretch hemline. But they’re easier to style with your favourite summer wares than you may think. The most difficult part is knowing which shoes to wear with them, but we’re here to tell you they work with flip flops, heels, wedges, ballet flats and even trainers.
